Precision Farming – a bigger harvest with no extra land - Field Report 1

US farmer Pete Carson is a strong advocate of the Fieldstar precision farming system to manage nitrogen levels, increase sugar content of beet, target pesticide applications and – last but not least – boost production.

Using the Global Positioning System (GPS), the Fieldstar system allows Pete to accurately monitor his crop input and yields. Being able to keep close track of his fields not only saves him considerable sums of money, it has also opened his eyes to new profit opportunities with the land he already farms.

Admittedly, precision farming does require careful attention and is no automatic wonder device. But it pays off. Since starting to make use of the concept, Pete has experienced increased yields, improved crop quality, better crop input decisions, accurate management of nitrogen carry over, and timely fungicide treatments.

Pete reports no regrets about his investment in precision agriculture. So far his gross profit per acre has reached USD 818 compared to the USD 708 obtained by the average farmer. Although quite satisfied with his results so far, his positive experiences with this precision tool lead him to believe that there is still room for further production increases – maybe another 20% or even 50%.
